Evidence shows that the black-tail deer was introduced to Kodiak Island around the turn of the century, at that time there wasn’t very many. Records show in 1924 there were 14 deer were Sitka were released on long Island that is adjacent to Kodiak.
In 1934 nine more black-tail were introduced to Kodiak Island. After that the population was established started to grow. In 1953 legal hunting began and the first 38 bucks were taken. By the late 60’s the black-tail on Kodiak were thriving. 1967 was the first great for hunters, they took around 1,500 deer that season.
Alaska’s department of fish and game estimates that there are over 80,000 Kodiak black-tail deer. With are large population and the low winter kills we are seeing some of the best hunting we have ever seen. So grab the wife or kiss her good bye and come join us for the hunt of a lifetime.
